Hi everyone! My name is Kelly, and I’m a second year student in Alpha Phi currently serving as one of our Directors of Sisterhood. Since joining last year, I knew I wanted to be involved in planning Sisterhood events because they foster stronger relationships between our members. Obviously, we haven’t planned many of our usual events, but instead we have spent our time coming up with creative activities that keep our members engaged and connected while we can’t all be together.
We really made an effort to think outside of the box and come up with fun ideas for activities that don’t rely too much on Zoom. I know firsthand that we are all spending hours every day staring at our computer screens, so we want events to be a time for members to take a break from Zoom and enjoy doing something outside of work or school. We’re going to be kicking off the semester’s events in just a couple weeks with one of our favorite non-Zoom event ideas: a Netflix movie party! The movie night is going to include hot chocolate and popcorn pick-ups at the house and a fun movie to take everyone’s minds off of classes. We can’t wait!
Since UVA is allowing sororities to have gatherings in accordance with the school’s six-person limit, we are planning to incorporate socially distanced food and treat pick-ups outside the house to make our events more interactive. We feel as though members will be more excited about events if we incorporate snacks and a safe, interactive aspect along with whatever activity is planned. Without revealing too much, we have some awesome treats for everyone this semester!
We are working hard to leverage the talents and skills of women within our own chapter in planning sisterhood events. A handful of our members are certified yoga and/or fitness instructors, and many of them offered to virtually teach classes to the chapter. We are also planning to set up an online marketplace for our chapter as several of our members have small businesses with awesome and unique products! Throughout such a strange time, we have been so lucky to lean on our members and their talents to bring all of us together.
As we kick off the Spring semester, everyone in our chapter has a renewed commitment to maintaining a sense of community. With one full semester of virtual events under our belts, we now know what worked best for our members and use this to maintain the engagement of our chapter. We can’t wait to share all of the fun events we have planned with everyone, and continue to look forward
to the days when we can all be together again!
