Gearing Up for Recruitment

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Recruitment is one of our favorite times of the year! Not only does it give us time to bond as a chapter, but it also allows us to meet so many fantastic women within the UVA community. Although things are a little different this year, we are still super excited to bring in the new year with a great group of ladies.

Virtual Recruitment is going to be quite the experience, but we can’t wait to make it just as fun and welcoming as ever. Getting to know you all is one of the most rewarding processes, as it allows us to connect with others that we may not have had the chance to interact with otherwise.

Coming into Recruitment on the Potential New Member side is definitely a little nerve-wracking, but we always try our best to make PNMs feel welcome. We want you to know that we are so interested in getting to know you and can’t wait for our conversations!

A few tips for you all as you are going through the process:

  1. Be Yourself

Don’t try and fit into a certain mold. We want to know YOU - what you are excited about, your hobbies, interests, etc. The best conversations are those when you are comfortable and sharing your most genuine self!

  1. Be Open-minded

Many people come into Recruitment with certain expectations, but those of us who have gone through the experience can tell you that finding a group of people that match your energy is about more than a preconceived notion. Who knows, a certain house may just surprise you.

  1. Take Notes After Rounds

You’re going to meet a ton of people during Recruitment and remembering exactly what you talked about when it’s time to record preferences can feel a little overwhelming. Keeping notes after rounds can help you keep track of conversations, women you met, and where you felt most at home.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Although you won’t be walking between houses this year, you will still be meeting plenty of women which means a lot of talking. Don’t stress your voice and keep a water bottle close during rounds. Relax at the end of the day with some tea or something to soothe your throat (Throat Coat is a lifesaver).

  1. Be Well Rested

Recruitment will be during classes this year and time spent on Zoom leads to the well-known “Zoom Fatigue.” Make sure you are getting a good amount of sleep and that you take breaks from your laptop when you can. Step outside, get fresh air or settle down with a good book to destress and relax after a long day.

We are so excited to meet you all and can’t wait to share our favorite parts of Alpha Phi with you. We hope you love Alpha Phi as much as we do!
